Westchester officials requested that Con Ed hold off on their announced moratorium as they gather information and seek solutions. In response, Con Ed reportedly said that it’s a simply matter of “supply and demand,” and that at some point the supply will run out, potentially before the March 15 deadline.
“The demand for natural gas in our service area has been experiencing significant growth primarily due to the construction of new buildings, the opening of new businesses, and conversions from oil to cleaner-burning natural gas in existing buildings,” Con Ed said. “But all of this new demand for gas is reaching the limits of the current supplies to our service area.”
Furthering those concerns, Con Ed officials announced that customer applications for gas service are being accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis until the supply runs out.
New York Public Service Commission chairman John Rhodes announced this that there will be public hearings in Westchester location beginning on Monday, Feb. 11. A report from the Commission is expected to be completed and made public no later than July 1.
Con Ed said that they are developing additional programs through Smart Solutions proposals to the NY Public Service Commission, and are working with NYSERDA, which offers incentive programs for clean energy solutions. Heat pumps, solar thermal and baseboard electric heating are among the alternative solutions that can meet some customers’ heating needs.
